This subject explores the impact and relevance of Primary Health Care in its context as a World Health Organization (WHO) strategy for achieving "Health for All".  It examines ways in which Primary Health Care, along with other significant WHO initiatives, including the 'Sustainable Development Goals' provides a framework for just and humane health care systems now and into the future.  Opportunity for discussion of the complex factors that impact on the health status of populations is provided.  Complex dimensions of health and well-being are explored, enabling students to inform health care practices and planning of programmes that can lead to sustainable health within a primary health care framework.

This subject encourages students to investigate and discuss the concepts of health and illness in the context of cultural and social diversity.  The subject promotes the attainment of critical knowledge and core principles necessary for students to become holistic, culturally and socially sensitive and appropriately adaptable when meeting the health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, other marginalised and vulnerable groups including refugees and those from LGBTI community, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALED) backgrounds.  A multicultural approach provides a framework for students to explore the impact of different attitude and value systems relating to the health of peoples in Australia.

Social epidemiology explores the effects of social-structural factors and their impact on health outcomes.  This subject explores the principles, strategies and activities associated with social epidemiology, including the contribution of the social determinants of health in understanding the incidence, prevalence, and distribution of health-related states in different populations.  Students will explore the importance of primary health care decision making and evidence-based evaluation to improve health outcomes in clinical practice.

This subject enables students to gain an understanding of the political and social constructions that underpin health care services such as social determinants of health.  It also provides students with the opportunity to explore and critically analyse issues related to the development, implementation and outcomes of health and aged care policies.

This subject provides students with the opportunity to apply the principles of primary health care to an area of primary health care concern in their workplace or community.  Each student will gain comprehensive knowledge of the process of action research, participatory action research and collaborative inquiry to improve an identified issue in their workplace practice.

The planning, development and implementation of primary health care initiatives rest largely on the capacity of health care workers to develop and engage in partnerships with a diverse range of consumers, health care workers and organisations.  In this subject, students will critically examine the complexities inherent in developing and sustaining effective an active partnerships with indiv.

This subject offers a range of options for students to integrate, extend and reflect on the professional knowledge and skills gained through their masters level studies. It will provide a framework within which students can explore professionally relevant situations. Students will have the opportunity to nominate, plan and execute a capstone experience relevant to their professional interests. In doing so, students will develop a professional portfolio or e-portfolio that will incorporate the work undertaken during the degree studies and extend to include a critical reflection of their graduate capacity and professional development.

Classes will be conducted in English.
